Quant Market Brief — September 9, 2026

Share

Research cutoff: September 9, 2026, 6:32 a.m. CT. Premarket readings are indicative, delayed, or non-consolidated where noted.

1. OpenAI deepens chip-development work with Samsung

Fact: OpenAI said it has made progress with Samsung Electronics on joint production and research for next-generation chips. OpenAI also described Samsung as one of the largest ChatGPT deployments globally, although it did not disclose absolute user numbers. Reuters, September 9

Inference: Frontier-model developers are treating hardware co-design and memory supply as strategic capabilities, not interchangeable inputs.

Uncertainty: The companies did not disclose architecture, division of responsibilities, production timing, performance, cost, or binding purchase commitments.

Why it matters: Keep MATLAB AI pipelines portable across model providers and accelerators. Benchmark end-to-end latency, memory use, numerical equivalence, reliability, and cost on the actual target hardware.

2. CME FX futures and options reach record open interest

Fact: CME reported that FX futures and options open interest reached a record 4,410,167 contracts on September 4, above the previous June record. The number of large open-interest holders reached 1,446 in the CFTC’s August 25 report, while asset-manager notional open interest exceeded $200 billion for the first time. CME Group, September 7

Inference: Currency hedging demand is broadening as rates, energy, and geopolitical shocks increase cross-border risk.

Uncertainty: Open interest is a stock of outstanding positions—not volume, directional exposure, executable depth, or proof of tight spreads. The figures are exchange-reported and aggregate heterogeneous contracts.

Why it matters: Do not substitute open interest for liquidity. Quant systems should evaluate each currency pair, maturity, session, spread, depth, roll, and realized fill quality separately.

3. Flat headline futures give way to softer ETF indications as oil breaches $100

Abstract SPY, QQQ, crude-oil, and options-market graphic

Fact: At 4:05 a.m. CT, Dow E-minis were down 0.16%, S&P 500 E-minis were flat, and Nasdaq-100 E-minis were up 0.04%. Brent had breached $100 before trading near $99.94. Closer to the cutoff, SPY was indicated at 763.74, down 0.29%, at 6:27 a.m. CT, while QQQ was indicated at 715.39, down 0.50%, at 6:09 a.m. CT. Reuters, September 9, SPY, QQQ

Inference: The change from nearly flat futures to softer ETF indications suggests the opening book is repricing the interaction of oil, yields, and duration rather than following one stable overnight signal.

Uncertainty: Premarket ETF quotes were non-consolidated, and reliable futures volume, spreads, depth, auction imbalances, and dealer gamma were unavailable.

Why it matters: Gate SPY and QQQ participation on fresh NQ–ES relative strength, oil, yields, breadth, auction conditions, and realized slippage. Treat each timestamped session as a distinct state.

4. Inflation expectations hold, but unemployment and household-finance concerns worsen

Abstract U.S. household expectations, inflation, employment, and Federal Reserve graphic

Credit: original Market State Lab Federal Reserve and economics graphic.

Fact: The New York Fed’s August survey showed median one- and five-year inflation expectations unchanged at 3.6% and 3.0%, while the three-year measure slipped to 3.2%. The perceived probability that unemployment will be higher in one year rose to 44.4%, its highest since April 2020; credit-access and household-finance expectations also deteriorated. Federal Reserve Bank of New York, September 8

Inference: Consumers are describing a difficult mix of persistent price pressure and weaker perceived labor-market security, complicating the Fed’s inflation-growth tradeoff.

Uncertainty: The roughly 1,300-household internet panel was fielded through August 31, before the latest oil-price jump. Expectations are not realized inflation, employment, or FOMC decisions.

Why it matters: Keep inflation expectations, realized inflation, labor expectations, and market-implied policy probabilities separate. Require confirmation from PPI, CPI, and rates before changing regime labels.

Abstract AI data-center chips, optical connectivity, and technology-business graphic

Credit: original Market State Lab technology/business graphic.

Fact: Qualcomm said Amazon could buy up to $60 billion of AI data-center chips and related products under a long-term agreement. Purchase-linked warrants could let Amazon acquire roughly $4 billion of Qualcomm stock at $161.26 per share. The companies will also develop optical-connectivity technology extending to 1.6 terabits per second. Reuters, September 8

Inference: AI-infrastructure competition is expanding from accelerators into inference silicon, optical interconnects, and customer-financing structures.

Uncertainty: The headline purchase amount is a ceiling, not recognized revenue. Vesting, order timing, margins, deployment performance, customer concentration, and dilution determine the economics.

Why it matters: Separate contracted capacity from revenue and cash flow. Track purchase milestones, warrant dilution, gross margin, optical attach rates, utilization, and delivery execution.

Quant & Market Dashboard

Liquidity and funding

  • Futures: At 4:05 a.m. CT, Dow E-minis were −0.16%, S&P 500 E-minis were flat, and Nasdaq-100 E-minis were +0.04%. Consolidated volume, spreads, and depth were unavailable. Reuters
  • ETF indications: SPY was 763.74, −0.29%, at 6:27 a.m. CT on 191,848 premarket shares. QQQ was 715.39, −0.50%, at 6:09 a.m. CT. These were delayed or non-consolidated indications, not guaranteed executable prices.
  • Prior session: SPY closed September 8 at 765.96, down 0.55%, on 44.74 million shares. QQQ closed at 718.36, down 0.08%, on 27.31 million shares. SPY, QQQ
  • Treasuries: The September 8 indicative bid-side par curve showed 2-year 4.39%, 10-year 4.80%, 20-year 5.26%, and 30-year 5.25%. U.S. Treasury
  • Funding: Latest published observations were September 4 SOFR at 3.65% and EFFR at 3.63%. September 8 fixings were not available by the cutoff after the holiday schedule. SOFR, EFFR
  • Volatility: VIX closed September 8 at 15.72. September, October, and November VX settled at 16.6283, 18.4020, and 19.1354—an upward curve. VIX, Cboe settlements

Volatility regime

Moderate, medium confidence. Mid-teens VIX and VX contango are not acute stress signals. Oil above $100 intraday, elevated long yields, weak Tuesday breadth, VIX settlement, same-day expiries, and Thursday/Friday inflation releases nevertheless raise opening and adverse-selection risk.

Factor proxies

Factor ETF September 8 Four weeks*
Momentum MTUM +1.26% +0.11%
Value VLUE −1.10% +2.77%
Quality QUAL −0.80% −1.94%
Size IWM −0.45% −2.10%

September 8 versus August 11 closes. Split-adjusted ETF price proxies excluding dividends—not pure-factor total returns. Sources: MTUM, VLUE, QUAL, IWM, IWF, SPLV.

Momentum led Tuesday despite the broad decline. Value was the only clear four-week leader; size and quality lagged most over that window.

Execution implications

  • Treat overnight futures, ETF premarket, the opening auction, VIX settlement, and the first 30 minutes as separate execution regimes.
  • Use auction-aware limits, participation caps, current-depth checks, and realized-slippage kill switches.
  • Rebuild SPY, QQQ, QCOM, AMZN, and semiconductor volatility, skew, open-interest, strike-liquidity, and gamma maps after the open.
  • Same-day expiry and VIX settlement can concentrate hedging near key strikes, but dealer gamma direction was not verified.
  • Treasury’s long-end buyback details and the next two inflation releases create discrete rates-liquidity transitions; do not carry one cost model across them.
  • Reject stale, crossed, zero-bid, one-sided, or thin options quotes. Do not infer executable depth from displayed size alone.

Watchlist: SPY, QQQ, IWM, TLT, VIX, MTUM, VLUE, QUAL, IWF, SPLV, QCOM, AMZN, NVDA, AVGO, SMH, SOXX, XLE, CL, UUP, FXE, FXY, 6E, 6J, ES, NQ, ZT, ZN, ZB, VX.

DRL Improvements for the MATLAB System

  1. Add oil shocks, NQ–ES relative strength, yield changes, FX dispersion, VX slope, event countdown, quote age, auction state, and expiry state.
  2. Enforce drawdown, concentration, turnover, liquidity, and daily-loss constraints outside the reward; penalize downside risk and implementation shortfall inside it.
  3. Randomize inflation surprises, oil gaps, curve shifts, spread widening, partial fills, stale quotes, settlement effects, latency, and nonlinear impact.
  4. Use purged, embargoed walk-forward evaluation with frozen baselines, multiple seeds, regime scorecards, and untouched inflation and geopolitical event blocks.

Model hygiene

Control leakage, survivorship and look-ahead bias, first-known timestamps, corporate actions, stale options quotes, crossed markets, and multiple testing. Calibrate out of sample, retain rejected trials, and monitor feature, probability, policy, transaction-cost, and regime drift.

MATLAB optimization

  • Align market, macro, FX, expiry, and event data using timetable, retime, and synchronize while preserving availability timestamps.
  • Vectorize rolling features, preallocate episode buffers, and profile environment steps and memory transfers before parallelizing.
  • Run parallel bayesopt only across independent purged folds, using reproducible random streams and multiple policy seeds.
  • Reserve GPUs for sufficiently large neural-network batches; keep environment, cost, constraint, and agent modules separate.

High-value research question

Does the interaction of the overnight oil shock, NQ–ES spread, 10-year-yield change, and VIX term slope predict QQQ first-hour continuation versus reversal on VIX-settlement day after realistic auction and 0DTE option-hedging costs?

This targets an actionable opening decision while separating cross-asset information, settlement mechanics, and cash-session liquidity.
